The ongoing credit crunch has forced many of us to watch where we put our money and what we spend it on.

For many of us, with spiralling food prices and rising costs of bills, the last thing we can afford to think about is a holiday.

Here are a few handy hints for getting the most out of holidays on a shoestring:

Don’t be picky about destinations – sure we’ve all got our favourite places to go, but taking the chance to go somewhere you’ve never been before (especially if there is a package holiday on special offer) can add that little bit of excitement to your trip. Stay local – if you’re unable to splash a bit of cash on a trip abroad, look into attractions in your local area, you may be surprised at what you find. Be wary of your spending if you go abroad – half-board or all-inclusive holidays can save you money on food, but local restaurants will always try and tout you for business anyway. Don’t discount the holiday camps – taking a short break during the off-season can be a nice way to relax without having to be surrounded by screaming kids. All right, you’re on holiday. Great! Enjoy yourself as much as you possibly can …but don’t leave your brain at home!

Working as a receptionist for over 6 years now in the Canary Islands, Spain, I’ve seen cases where people have had all their money stolen and had to phone home to have someone send them money for their next meal!

These unwise tourists tend to leave their room/apartment keys lying on the table next to the one where they are sitting, laughing and having a drink or two. This makes it very easy for any opportunist to just walk by and swipe the key off the table, enter their room knowing exactly where you are in the meantime and operate at their own leisure stealing anything of value.

As a tourist, you must remember that many of those around you where you are enjoying yourselves, are neither tourists nor on holiday. And though most of the people you meet are really quite nice and you do live memorable moments in their company, just like at home, there are some rotten apples that have no respect for other people’s property.

Don’t give thieves the chance to ruin your holiday!

Whether you are vacationing in a first, second, or third world country, it is wise to always make use of the safe deposit box for money and valuables which most hotels and tourist complexes have at your disposal. Even if you have to pay for this service, which is quite likely, it’s well worth it for piece of mind.

Thieves do not reside only in third world countries. So be careful! It’s not a matter of being paranoid; it’s just a matter of common sense. You use common sense at home, don’t you? Then, why not use it when you’re on holiday? Travellers checks are a good idea also because your money is insured and you have to show some ID to cash them.

Ever wonder why hotel keys are so bulky?

Simply because the best place to leave a bulky, bothersome key is in the hands of the hotel reception staff while you’re not in your room. Yes, even when you’re sitting by the hotel pool getting a tan.

What about the safe key?

If you have a safe key, don’t put it together with your room key and hand it into reception, this defeats the purpose of hiring the safe in the first place. You’re the only one who should have access to it. And remember if the safe has not been forced open, chances are that the insurance won’t cover it due to your carelessness. Read the TOS! A good idea is to take the tag off the safe key and put the safe key with your house-key ring. If a thief finds your house keys on the street and does not know which safe the key belongs to, They’re probably not going to go through every complex in town and break into every room to test it.

Basic Thief Psychology

Thieves in vacation paradises are more like opportunists; they usually go for what is dead easy to steal (low hanging fruit). If you don’t make it easy for them, they will usually just go elsewhere to look for prey.

Beware of this Swindle!

If anyone in the hotel where you are staying asks you for your room number, don’t tell them! If a staff member (usually a receptionist) needs to know which room you are in they will ask you themselves or send another staff member to do it for them.

If you’ve never seen that staff member before, go to reception and ask them if they need to know your room number. Remember, hotels have master keys or duplicates to get into your room if something needs fixing, so do not hand your key to anyone but the receptionist for safe keeping.

So, why not tell them, you may ask? Simple, the person who wanted to know your room number knows where you are right at that moment and calculates how much time they’ve got to get in and out of your room before you arrive. Better yet, if he’s got a friend with a cell phone, his friend will sit close by you and warn him when you are on your way up. This is a TRUE LIFE CASE which happened in a few hotels where I have worked. Beware!

Summer is over, so thoughts quickly turn to winter and what we’ll do with our free time. Though we’re still mired in a recession, and swine flu is expected to make another appearance, many people will still take a vacation. I plan to, sometime in October. Like most travelers, I will be hoping to stretch my vacation dollar by looking for the best deal. My preference is for an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean. You may have totally different tastes. Regardless, heed the advice of travel experts, and search out those great deals.

The Aug. 21-23 issue of USA WEEKEND magazine carried a great article by Samantha Brown of the Travel Channel. I’ll summarize some of her points, and provide a few comments of my own.

1. Choose a place with all-in-one pricing, such as an all-inclusive resort. Time was when all-inclusives were “lampooned” by travelers. (Still are to a certain extent, I’ve found, especially among some travel writers.) Now, she writes, they are considered “hip.” One big advantage is that “you know all your costs up front.” I agree. It’s nice to be able to grab some food, a soda, or other pick-me-up throughout the day without having to scrounge through your pockets for cash or worry whether those little purchases will ultimately bust your budget.

An all-inclusive resort naturally costs more than a standard resort, but I think you’ll find the convenience well worth it. You’ve paid good money to get there, now just sit back (or lay back) and enjoy the sun. Vacationing is all about escaping routines and decision making. Try to arrange for the most relaxed and stress-free environment possible.

Brown also suggests checking out what she calls “a la carte resorts.” Those are traditional resorts that offer additional amenities, such as meals and drinks, under an optional meal plan. I’d compare pricing, though, between an all-inclusive resort and one offering the meal plan. You may find that for the price of the all-inclusive, you’ll want to make that leap. Still, it’s nice to know there’s an option between the two types of hotels.

2. Take a cruise. Cruising has become very popular, and the cruise lines are responding by packing an ever-increasing array of services on board. They are essentially all-inclusive trips, though drinks and some services are extra. Brown says that the industry has added 15 ships since last year, with five more expected to be launched this year. She adds that these new ships will need customers, which means lower prices. Another plus is that ships will be docking at more port cities. You can expect to reach one cheaper, as as result.

As a Midwesterner, I have to fly to the coast to take a cruise, but those of you near the coasts may save big on your airfare. Cruising has really established itself, if articles by the “cruisers” themselves are any indication. Some travel writers denounce the phenomenon, saying that cruise ships are basically floating cities. (”Why even get off the ship and tour the islands?” they complain.) It comes down to personal preference. Those who enjoy meeting distant peoples in distant lands will always be able to take such a trip. Those can be expensive in both time and money. A cruise can get you and your family away for some quality time at a reasonable price.

3. Check out your city. Yes, the city, Brown suggests. We often forget what’s in our own “backyard.” Museums, concerts, festivals, and more await us. Many are free or low cost. Research hotels for any hot deals they have going on the weekends. Many cater to the business crowd, and need folks to fill the rooms on the weekends.

Reading this suggestion reminded me of the opportunities in downtown Milwaukee, which is about 20 minutes from my home. Two great museums, an IMAX theater, an educational facility geared around the Great Lakes (and a schooner to ride in summer), and so much more. Each charges admission, and I still have to pay for parking, but one can take in a lot of fun and enjoyment for comparatively little expenditure in those types of venues.

As you begin thinking about your next vacation, consider the numerous options available to you. Some are near; some are far. Use your computer and/or travel agent to seek out a fun and enjoyable place at a reasonable price. You will be so glad you did.

The cost of travel has skyrocketed and many are trying to vacation closer to home to cut down on costs, but if you can’t get that Caribbean sunset out of your mind and you long to feel the sand between your toes, there are some smart ways to save on your next Caribbean getaway.

1. Comparison shop for flights. There are many travel sites that are designed to help you find the cheapest fare available for the dates you select. This takes the guesswork out of finding a good deal on airfare. You should also use two or three and compare the fares that they come up with to be absolutely certain that you are getting the most bang for your buck.

2. Find a value hotel. There is something to be said for the popular all inclusive trend but they are certainly not the only option. You can find almost any type of accommodation to suit your budget; from short-term apartment rentals to hotels that offer breakfast only to the ubiquitous all-inclusive resort. Value is what you get when you juxtapose the items on your wish list with the best price. All-inclusive resorts therefore offer great value for those that simply want to relax in a pleasant environment with absolutely no hassle, whereas those who would prefer to venture out to explore a bit of the island may be better off sticking to a breakfast only option.

3. Travel in the low season. There can be a vast difference in price between the low season and the peak season so simply choosing the right time to travel to the Caribbean can save you money automatically. The peak season for the Caribbean region logically is December through to April which coincides with the winter months in northern countries. For lower rates on accommodation try booking during the low season.

4. Eat where the locals eat. If you opt for the breakfast only option or a type of accommodation that does not include meals you should venture out of the tourist district and try one of the restaurants that cater to the locals. The prices are usually vastly different and you have the added bonus of sampling some of the indigenous cuisine.

5. Convert to the local currency. It is advisable to convert roughly half of your total spending money into the local currency. This way you can take advantage of lower sticker prices and you avoid trading your currency at disadvantageous rates. Most places will give you change in the local currency even if you spend your US dollars, pounds sterling or Euro dollars anyway, so to avoid losing on the exchange convert some upfront and then see how things go.

6. Don’t go crazy on trinkets. You may think you need ten different items to remember your holiday, but these little trinkets can be real money suckers. Try to avoid going into every single tourist shop and enjoy the ambiance and overall culture instead. You should also remember to bring along your digital camera to capture those precious moments.

It’s not the money you spend that makes a vacation memorable, so cut costs where you can and soak up all there is to experience on your trip to the islands. The music and the food are two of the regions greatest crowd-pleasers, not to forget of course the beautiful beaches and gorgeous weather and you can easily indulge in all of these without exceeding your budget if you plan in advance.
